General Information About the Test
Test Process and Preparation
Sepsis is an emergency and fatal condition where the infection enters the bloodstream and can lead to organ failure. While a blood culture takes days to produce a result, the PCT test plays a life-saving role by indicating within a few hours whether the infection has entered the bloodstream (sepsis).
No. The biggest advantage of the PCT test is that it does not yield high results in viral infections (Covid-19, flu, cold, etc.). If the patient has a fever but a low PCT value, the unnecessary use of antibiotics is prevented.
It is measured in the laboratory using a standard tube of blood drawn from a vein. Because it is requested in emergency situations, fasting or having eaten does not matter.
