Prolactin

General Information About the Test

Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain, and its primary function is to stimulate milk production in the breasts during and after pregnancy. It is also known as the "milk hormone." High prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) in women who are not pregnant or in men cause complaints such as menstrual irregularities, infertility, milk discharge from the breasts, and low libido.

Test Process and Preparation

Prolactin hormone measurement and stress-related fluctuations.

The most common cause is small, benign tumors (Prolactinoma) that form in the pituitary gland. In addition to this, stress, excessive exercise, trauma to the chest wall, an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), and certain stomach/psychiatric medications can also elevate this hormone.

It is also present in men, but its level is low. If a male patient has complaints of low libido, erectile dysfunction, unexplained weight gain, and breast enlargement (gynecomastia) or milk discharge, the prolactin level is checked.

The prolactin hormone is very sensitive to sleep and stress. To prevent a falsely elevated result, it is mandatory that at least 1-2 hours have passed since the patient woke up in the morning before giving blood, that they rest for 15 minutes upon arriving at the hospital, and stay away from stress.
