Prothrombin Time

General Information About the Test

Prothrombin Time (PT/INR) is an important blood test that measures how long, in seconds, it takes for blood to clot. It indicates whether the prothrombin protein produced by the liver and other coagulation factors are working correctly. Its most common use is to precisely adjust (via the INR value) the dosage of blood-thinning medications like "Coumadin (Warfarin)" used by patients who have had heart valve surgery or are at risk of forming blood clots.

Test Process and Preparation

PT/INR test and blood thinner medication monitoring.
What is the INR value and why is it calculated?

INR is a mathematical ratio that allows test results from different laboratories to be standardized (brought to a common language) anywhere in the world. In patients using Coumadin (Warfarin), the target INR is generally maintained between 2.0 and 3.0.

What does a very high or very low value signify?

A very high PT/INR value indicates that the blood is too thin and the patient's risk of internal bleeding or a brain hemorrhage has increased. Conversely, a very low value indicates that the blood is not thin enough and the danger of forming blood clots in the vessels continues.

Is fasting required for the test?

There is no fasting requirement when giving a blood sample. However, it is very important for patients to consistently consume foods that affect blood clotting (especially dark green leafy vegetables containing Vitamin K) in steady amounts in their daily diets, rather than avoiding them just for the test.
