PSA

General Information About the Test

PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a protein produced exclusively by the cells of the prostate gland in men, and it regulates the consistency of semen. It is found in very small amounts in the blood of healthy men. The PSA test is a life-saving blood test used worldwide as the first-line screening tool for the early diagnosis of Prostate Cancer and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) by measuring the amount of this protein in the bloodstream.

Test Process and Preparation

PSA prostate screening test and the age factor.

Absolutely not. Conditions such as age-related benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), inflammation of the urinary tract or prostate (prostatitis), sexual intercourse, and the insertion of a catheter into the urinary tract also significantly raise the PSA value.

Most of the PSA protein in the blood is bound to other proteins, while a small portion circulates freely. When the "Total PSA" is borderline high, the "Free PSA" value and the ratio between the two are checked to distinguish between cancer and benign enlargement.

The PSA test does not require fasting. However, for an accurate result, it is very important to avoid sexual intercourse (ejaculation) and heavy cycling or motorcycle riding for 48 hours before giving blood, and to give blood before a digital rectal examination of the prostate is performed by a doctor.
