In order to perform the procedure, it must be 100% certain that the woman is not pregnant. Therefore, the imaging is done on the days immediately following the complete end of menstrual (period) bleeding (usually between the 6th and 11th days from the start of menstruation).
Although HSG was known as a painful procedure due to the rigid instruments used in the past, today, thanks to the new generation of thin, soft catheters and advanced imaging techniques used, pain has been minimized (feeling like a mild menstrual cramp). If necessary, a painkiller can be taken before the procedure, or the scan can be performed while asleep under anesthesia.
Yes. Even though HSG is a diagnostic (imaging) method, the contrast fluid injected into the uterus under pressure can clear very fine adhesions and small plugs in the tubes, thereby opening them. For this reason, many women are able to conceive spontaneously in the first few months following an HSG.
