If the patient's complaint is only fresh red bleeding during defecation, anal pain, swelling, or itching, the problem is most likely in the final section (hemorrhoids or a fissure). Rectoscopy is a practical method that provides an instant diagnosis in 5 minutes in an outpatient setting, without requiring the long and exhausting cleansing of the entire bowel.
Unlike a colonoscopy, there is no need for days of fasting or drinking intensive laxatives. Emptying the final section with a simple enema (a cleansing liquid medication) administered through the anus a few hours before the procedure is sufficient for a rectoscopy.
Because the rectoscopy procedure is very brief and does not go as deep as a colonoscopy, it generally does not require sedation (putting to sleep). With local anesthetic and lubricating gels applied to the area, the procedure is mostly completed painlessly, creating only a mild sensation of fullness or the urge to use the toilet.
