Reversibility Test

General Information About the Test

The Reversibility Test is a critical Pulmonology test that measures whether the narrowing detected in the airways after a standard Pulmonary Function Test (Spirometry) can be opened with medication. The patient is given a bronchodilator (airway-opening) medication, and the test is repeated after a while. It is particularly used to distinguish between Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and to establish the correct treatment plan.

Test Process and Preparation

Administration of the medicated breathing test and differentiating asthma from COPD.
What does it mean if the test is positive?

The test is considered "positive" if there is a significant improvement in the patient's blowing capacity (FEV1 value) after the bronchodilator medication is given. This condition indicates that the narrowing in the airways is temporary (reversible) and generally supports the diagnosis of "Asthma."

If the test is negative, is it definitely COPD?

If there is no improvement in respiratory capacity despite the administration of medication (irreversible narrowing), this situation mostly points to COPD. However, a definitive diagnosis is evaluated in conjunction with the patient's clinical history.

Should I stop taking my medications before the test?

Yes. To obtain an accurate result, you will generally be asked to stop using your current bronchodilator inhaler (puffer) medications 12 to 24 hours before the test, under the supervision of your physician.
