Scintigraphy Test

General Information About the Test

Scintigraphy is a test performed by Nuclear Medicine specialists to image the "working functions" of organs at the cellular level, rather than their anatomical structure. A very low dose of a radioactive drug (radiopharmaceutical) is administered to the patient intravenously or orally. This drug travels to and binds to the target organ (thyroid, bone, kidney, heart), and special Gamma Cameras map how well the organ is functioning and whether there is a tumor or dysfunction.

Test Process and Preparation

Nuclear medicine imaging, scintigraphy scanning, and safety steps.
For which organs is it most frequently requested?

It is frequently applied to understand whether thyroid nodules are toxic (hot) or non-functioning (cold) (Thyroid Scintigraphy), to screen whether cancer has spread to the bones (Bone Scintigraphy), and to measure the blood supply functions of the kidneys (Renal/DMSA Scintigraphy).

Is the radioactive substance administered harmful?

The dose of the radioactive substance administered is within diagnostic limits and generally contains radiation equivalent to standard X-ray examinations. The drug is excreted through urine within hours after the scan. It is important to drink plenty of water on the day of the scan.

Can pregnant women undergo scintigraphy?

Because it involves radiation, it is not routinely performed on pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. If an extremely urgent diagnosis is required, breastfeeding mothers are asked to pump their milk after the scan and not give it to their babies for 24-48 hours.
