Because mostly flexible and thin devices are used today, the procedure is quite comfortable. Thanks to the local anesthetic gels applied to the urinary tract, usually only a slight pressure is felt. However, if deemed necessary (or if a biopsy/intervention is to be performed), it can also be done under mild sedation or general anesthesia.
A cystoscopy procedure performed purely for diagnostic (imaging) purposes is generally completed in a short time such as 5 to 15 minutes in an outpatient setting.
For a day or two following the procedure, feeling a burning sensation while urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, and very slight pinkness (bleeding) in the urine are considered normal. Drinking plenty of fluids quickly resolves these complaints.
