Test Process and Preparation
During a gynecological examination, a swab (sample) is taken from the shed surface cells by touching the cervix with a small, soft brush (or spatula). The procedure takes seconds, does not cause pain or discomfort, and no tissue is torn off.
To get an accurate result, you must not engage in sexual intercourse, use a vaginal douche, or use vaginal suppositories or creams for 48 hours prior to the test. Furthermore, the test is not performed while there is menstrual (period) bleeding.
According to general medical guidelines, it is recommended to start after the age of 21 (or in the years following the first sexual intercourse) and to repeat it every 3 years if the results are normal. When performed together with the HPV DNA test (co-test), this period can be extended up to 5 years. Your doctor will determine the frequency based on your risk status.
