Sperm Test

General Information About the Test

A Sperm Test (Spermiogram) is the fundamental laboratory test in which semen is examined in detail in a microscopic environment to evaluate male reproductive health and infertility status. In this analysis, not only the sperm cell count but also many parameters that directly affect reproductive success, such as sperm motility, shape (morphology), vitality rate, semen volume, and pH value, are measured.

Test Process and Preparation

Spermiogram analysis and rules for providing a sample.
Is sexual abstinence mandatory before the test?

Yes. To obtain the most accurate cell count, a period of "sexual abstinence" (no ejaculation by any means) of at least 3 and at most 5 days is mandatory before the test. Abstinence of less than 2 days or more than 7 days will inaccurately affect the results.

Should the sample be provided at the hospital?

Sperm are very sensitive to temperature changes outside the body. For this reason, the gold standard is for the sample to be provided in special, quiet rooms allocated for this purpose in hospitals and delivered to the laboratory without losing any time.

Does a low result indicate definitive infertility?

No. Stress, a recent febrile illness, fatigue, or the use of medications can temporarily impair sperm values. When an abnormal test result is obtained, the test is generally requested to be repeated after 3-4 weeks.
