In a healthy person at sea level, oxygen saturation (SpO2) is expected to be between 95% and 100%. A drop in this value below 90% is medically dangerous and indicates that the patient needs urgent oxygen support (hypoxia).
It does not hurt in any way, and no needles are inserted into the body. The device is simply clipped onto the finger and analyzes the color of oxygen in the blood by sending infrared light waves.
Yes. Dark-colored or glittery nail polishes and artificial (acrylic) nails on the finger can block the device's light, leading to an inaccurate and low measurement. In addition, the patient having very cold hands (decreased blood circulation) also affects the result.
