Test Process and Preparation
The majority of hormones circulate in the blood bound to proteins (Total) and are inactive. Looking at the "Free" form, which is not bound to proteins and actively affects the cells, reflects the true function of the thyroid more accurately. Today, Free T3 and Free T4 tests are generally requested.
If hormones are overproduced (Hyperthyroidism/Toxic Goiter); palpitations, rapid weight loss, sweating, and irritability are observed. If hormones are underproduced (Hypothyroidism); constant feeling of cold, weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, and dry skin are experienced.
If you are currently taking thyroid medication (Tefor, Levotiron, etc.), you should not take your medication when coming to give blood in the morning. You should give your blood on a full or empty stomach (fasting is generally preferred) and take your medication immediately after giving blood.
