Complete Urinalysis

General Information About the Test

A Complete Urinalysis is a basic, rapid, and painless laboratory test that provides very valuable information about the overall metabolic health of the body, particularly the kidneys and urinary tract. Just as the color, acidity (pH), and concentration of the urine are measured, the presence of substances that should not normally be in the urine, such as blood (erythrocytes), inflammation (leukocytes), sugar (glucose), and protein (albumin), is examined microscopically and chemically.

Test Process and Preparation

Routine urinalysis parameters and rules for proper sample collection.
What does the presence of blood or leukocytes (inflammation) in the urine mean?

The presence of leukocytes (white blood cells) in the urine indicates an infection in the urinary tract (cystitis). The presence of erythrocytes (blood) can indicate an infection, kidney stones, passing sand, or prostate problems.

Is it normal to have sugar (Glucose) in the urine?

There is no sugar in the urine of a healthy person because the kidneys reabsorb glucose. If the blood sugar rises above a certain threshold (usually 180 mg/dL), it leaks into the urine. The presence of sugar in the urine is a harbinger of "Diabetes."

How is a proper urine sample given?

For the best result, the first urine of the morning is preferred. After cleaning the genital area with water in the toilet, the first few drops of urine are passed outside, and the "midstream" portion of the urine is collected in the plastic container provided by the hospital. This method prevents bacterial contamination.

Is a urine culture the same thing as a complete urinalysis?

No. A complete urinalysis checks the chemical composition of the urine and the cells within it (blood, leukocytes, protein) in minutes. A urine culture, on the other hand, is a different test that finds the exact name of the microbe and to which antibiotic it is sensitive by multiplying the bacteria in the urine in a laboratory over several days.
