TEE

General Information About the Test

TEE (Transesophageal Echocardiography) is an advanced cardiological procedure that visualizes the heart much closer and clearly from behind. Like a stomach endoscopy, a flexible tube (probe) equipped with an ultrasound at its tip is inserted through the mouth and down into the esophagus. Because the chest bones and lungs do not get in the way, it is vastly superior to standard ultrasound (transthoracic ECHO) in detecting small infections on the heart valves, congenital holes, or blood clots inside the heart that could cause a stroke.

Test Process and Preparation

The procedure of cardiac ultrasound via the esophagus and patient compliance.
How is the procedure performed, is it difficult?

A local anesthetic spray is applied to the patient's throat, and relaxing (sedative) medications are administered intravenously. Then, the thin ultrasound tube is guided down into the esophagus with a swallowing motion. The procedure is painless and takes about 15-20 minutes.

Is fasting required?

Absolutely yes. To prevent the risk of vomiting and aspiration into the lungs, as the procedure is performed in an area close to the stomach, eating and drinking must be completely stopped at least 6-8 hours before the procedure.

What should be considered after the procedure?

Nothing should be eaten or drunk until the numbness in the throat wears off (for about 2 hours). Because sedation is administered, it is not recommended for the patient to drive or perform tasks requiring concentration on the same day.
