Transferrin Saturation Test

General Information About the Test

Transferrin Saturation is a mathematical laboratory value expressed as a percentage (%) indicating how much of the protein called "transferrin," which transports iron in the blood, is filled (saturated) with iron. It is one of the most important indicators used for the early diagnosis not only of Iron Deficiency Anemia but also of "Hemochromatosis," a disease that causes a fatally excessive accumulation of iron in the body.

Test Process and Preparation

Iron binding capacity and saturation calculation.

A drop in saturation below 15-20% means that there is not enough iron to be transported in the blood, directly confirming a picture of "Iron Deficiency Anemia." In this case, the Ferritin value, which is the stored iron, is generally low as well.

Yes. If the transferrin saturation is over 45-50%, it means there is an iron overload in the body. This condition, called Hemochromatosis, must be treated urgently as it can lead to cirrhosis in the liver, heart failure, and diabetes over time.

No. It is a ratio automatically calculated by the laboratory computer from the patient's "Iron" and "Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)" test results. It is generally preferred to be performed on an empty stomach in the morning.
