Triglycerides

General Information About the Test

Triglycerides are the type of fat (lipid) found in the blood and serve as the body's main energy reserve. Calories we eat in excess of what we need (especially sugar, alcohol, and carbohydrates) are instantly converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. Excessively high triglyceride levels in the blood cause hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), heart attacks, strokes, and at very high levels, acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

Test Process and Preparation

Measurement of triglycerides (Blood Fat) and heart health.
What should a healthy triglyceride level be?

According to cardiology guidelines, the target is for the triglyceride level in the blood to be below 150 mg/dL. Values over 200 mg/dL are considered high, and 500 mg/dL and above are considered "very high," requiring urgent dietary and medication intervention.

How are triglycerides lowered?

This type of fat responds directly and rapidly to nutrition. Cutting out simple sugars (sweets, pastries), fruit juices, and alcohol, losing weight, consuming Omega-3s (fish), and walking regularly are the fastest methods to lower triglycerides.

How long should I fast for the test?

Triglycerides are instantly affected by even the smallest bite of food you eat and remain high in the blood for hours. For an accurate measurement, a complete and strict fast of 10 to 12 hours (only water is allowed) is mandatory before giving blood.
