Urea (BUN Test)

General Information About the Test

Urea (Blood Urea Nitrogen - BUN) is a waste product resulting from the breakdown of proteins in the liver and is normally filtered by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. Measuring the Urea (BUN) level in the blood is the most fundamental biochemistry test, performed alongside the Creatinine test, to evaluate how healthy and effectively the kidneys are working.

Test Process and Preparation

Urea test and evaluation of kidney function.
What does an elevated urea level mean?

A high amount of urea in the blood generally indicates that the kidneys are unable to filter properly (kidney failure). However, it can also rise temporarily in cases of heart failure, severe fluid loss (dehydration), urinary tract obstructions, or gastrointestinal bleeding.

Does diet affect the urea result?

Yes. Even in healthy individuals who follow diets very high in meat and protein (carnivore style), the amount of urea produced in the blood will increase, so the values can be high. In low-protein diets or in cases of liver damage, urea falls below normal.

Is fasting required for the test?

Although a strict fast is not required for the urea test alone, because this test is always requested along with blood sugar and other kidney/liver functions (biochemistry panel), it is generally performed after an 8-10 hour fast in the morning.
