Test Process and Preparation
During the procedure, very thin, flexible, pressure-measuring catheters are inserted through the urinary tract (urethra) and the rectum. While the bladder is slowly filled with a sterile fluid, the pressure values at the moments the patient feels fullness and urgency are recorded on the computer. Then, the patient is asked to urinate into a special toilet.
Because very thin catheters are used and numbing gels are applied, the procedure is not unbearably painful; it only creates a feeling of discomfort and the urge to urinate. The procedure takes an average of 30-45 minutes.
There is no need to fast for the test. However, for the test to be performed, the patient must not have an active infection in the urinary tract; therefore, a complete urinalysis and culture are requested before the procedure. It is also recommended that the bowels be empty.
