Sleep Apnea Test

General Information About the Test

The Sleep Apnea Test (Polysomnography / Sleep Study) is the most comprehensive medical test performed to diagnose the vital disease "Obstructive Sleep Apnea," which causes a person's breathing to stop for seconds or even minutes during sleep. The patient spends the night in a fully equipped sleep laboratory. The severity of breathing pauses (AHI score) is calculated to determine whether the patient should just be given a diet or prescribed a nighttime oxygen mask (CPAP machine).

Test Process and Preparation

Diagnosis of sleep apnea and sleep laboratory procedures.
What are the symptoms of Sleep Apnea (breathing pauses)?

Severe and irregular snoring, waking up gasping for air during sleep, waking up extremely tired in the mornings, suddenly falling asleep during the day (at the wheel or at work), morning headaches, and stubborn high blood pressure are the clearest symptoms.

Will the devices attached to me during the test hurt?

The devices and cables do not hurt, but they do limit your movement to some extent. Brain waves, eye movements, heart rhythm, and respiratory effort are measured with sensors. Because the rooms offer hotel-like comfort, patients generally do not have difficulty sleeping.

What is Oxygen (CPAP/BPAP) machine titration?

During the first half of the test or on a subsequent night, a mask (CPAP) that supplies pressurized air to the patient is fitted to relieve the diagnosed apnea. The technician adjusts the pressure settings of this device throughout the night to determine the most appropriate "pressure value" (titration) that completely stops the patient's breathing pauses.
