Vertigo Balance Test (Videonystagmography - VNG)

General Information About the Test

Videonystagmography (VNG) is a state-of-the-art device-based test used to find the true source of a patient's complaints of severe dizziness (Vertigo) and loss of balance. The reflexes between the inner ear's balance centers and eye movements are recorded using special goggles equipped with cameras worn by the patient. It definitively distinguishes whether the disease originates from the crystals in the inner ear or from the cerebellum or nerve pathways.

Test Process and Preparation

Diagnosis of dizziness and the VNG test battery.
What is done during the test, does it cause dizziness?

The patient is fitted with dark goggles equipped with cameras. The patient is asked to track a light (oculomotor), and involuntary eye vibrations (nystagmus) are measured by moving the patient's head into different positions (e.g., back, right, left). In the final stage (Caloric Test), hot and cold air/water is administered into the ear to deliberately create brief dizziness.

How long does the test take?

A comprehensive VNG test battery takes an average of 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the subtests administered.

Should I stop taking medications before the test?

This is very important; you must completely stop taking dizziness medications (Vertigo pills), sleeping pills, or sedatives with your doctor's knowledge at least 48 hours before the test so they do not mask the test results. In addition, fasting for at least 3-4 hours is required to prevent nausea during the procedure.
